If you’re a regular reader of this blog, then you’ve certainly heard me mention how much I rely on our Instant Pot to help me keep my bright lines.  In fact, I consider it my Bright Line Eating secret weapon #2.

So let’s talk about how amazing the Instant Pot is when it comes to weight loss and Bright Line Eating.

The Dinner Danger Zone

If you’re the chief cook in your home, you’ve experienced the challenge of the late afternoon/early evening transition from the day to dinner.  On a good day, you know what you are going to make.  But on a typical day, you’re scrambling to figure it out.

It’s the perfect storm for breaking your bright lines.  Your stomach is grumbling and you’re worn out from a long day.  So your brain is telling you it wants high calorie foods and it wants them now!  And, of course, high calorie foods that are fast and easy are rarely healthy.

And then other challenges work to thwart your plans.  Maybe you forgot to thaw the meat or you discover that someone else finished the leftovers you needed.  Or perhaps you never made it to the grocery store to buy what you committed to eating in your food journal.

You, my friend, have just entered the dinner danger zone.

But what if you could flip things and make sticking to your bright lines the fast and easy decision?

What is an Instant Pot?

In case you don’t know what an Instant Pot is, let me fill you in and clarify some things.

An Instant Pot is an electric pressure cooker.  It works by heating a small amount of water and converting it to steam.  The steam is prevented from escaping which increases the pressure inside of the Instant Pot.  This high pressure then increases the temperature at which the remaining water boils (from 212 °F to about 250 °F or 100 °C to about 121 °C).  As a result, your food cooks very fast.

And this method of cooking is extremely eco-friendly.  Because the food cooks so much faster, you use much less energy than just about any alternative method.  You also can cook food with very little water.  For example, we use to boil our corn on the cob in a large pot of water on the stove.  Now we cook delicious corn on the cob in the Instant Pot with just one cup of water.

And be aware that “Instant Pot” is a brand name for an electric pressure cooker.  But much like “Kleenex” or “Crock-Pot”, it has become the generic name to refer to the category at large.  What does this matter?  Because there are other brands, including Crock-Pot, who manufacture electric pressure cookers which function similarly to the Instant Pot.

Why a Bright Line Eating Instant Pot?

So why is a Bright Line Eating Instant Pot such a powerful tool in your weight loss arsenal?  Glad you asked.

Automaticity

One of the core strategies of Bright Line Eating is automaticity.  And a Bright Line Eating Instant Pot is an amazing tool for leveraging the power of automaticity.  That is because the Instant Pot can be prepped hours before meal time which is well before you enter that dinner danger zone.

And if you forgot to thaw the meat for dinner?  No problem.

With an Instant Pot, you can cook thawed or frozen meat.  In fact, frozen meat is sometimes better if you’re prepping your meal hours before the delayed start is scheduled to turn on.

Bonus Tip: If you’re using thawed meat for a delayed start, then add some ice cubes to keep your meat cold.  Any ice that is still present when the delayed start kicks in will simply melt away as the pressure builds.

When you prep dinner in your Instant Pot, you are richly rewarded.  You can rest easy knowing that a delicious and compliant dinner will be ready on time.  This means a much lower chance of falling victim to the dinner danger zone.

And another perk?  No dinner prep means no temptation for BLTs (bites, licks and tastes) while you’re making dinner.

Bonus Tip: Prep your breakfast grain before bed and set it to delay start.  Then when you wake up in the morning, just add your protein and fruit servings and your breakfast is ready to enjoy!

Simplicity

Over time we have begun to realize just how easy most of our Bright Line Eating Instant Pot meals have become.  The recipes are simple, but so are the ingredients.  As a result, we recognized that we often use an easy Instant Pot recipe template.  It’s very simple.

  • 1 cup liquid (water or broth)
  • Meat (roast, tenderloin, pork chops, whole chicken, etc.)
  • Seasoning (salt, pepper, garlic, etc.)
  • Veggies (root veggies like carrots, parsnips, turnips, and also onions; sometimes frozen mushrooms)
  • Set on delay start and cook for 30 minutes to 2 hours (depending on cut of meat and if frozen or thawed)

But don’t let the simple recipes and ingredients fool you.  The pressure cooker is magic and the flavors are deep and complex.  There are just some things we will never cook any other way again.

Bonus Tip: To help keep things simple, use a short steamer basket when cooking a Bright Line Eating Instant Pot meal that includes meat and veggies.  Place your meat at the bottom and then place a vegetable steamer with veggies on top.  Then when your meal is done cooking, you can easily separate your meat and veggies.  This makes weighing and measuring your portions a breeze.

Our Instant Pot has almost replaced our oven and stovetop because we can do so many things in it.

Choosing the Right Instant Pot

When it comes to choosing your Bright Line Eating Instant Pot, bigger is generally the way to go.  That is because unlike a slow cooker, you can cook a small amount of food in a large Instant Pot.   If you were to cook a small batch of chili in a large slow cooker, it could easily burn.  (How would you like to clean up that mess?)  So when using a slow cooker, you need to have one that is in proportion to what you are making.

However, because of the way an Instant Pot cooks, the size of the pot doesn’t affect the cooking.  You can cook a single chicken breast in a large 8-Qt Instant Pot and it will turn out the same as if cooked in a small 3-Qt.  So because of that, I recommend getting as large of an Instant Pot as possible since you will sometimes need to feed extra people.

So what are the draw backs of a larger Instant Pot? 

Well, price is a factor, but price seems to vary based more on features than size.  Also, a larger Instant Pot takes up more counter and storage space.  And, the larger the Instant Pot, the longer it takes to build up pressure before it can start the cooking process. 

We originally started with a medium sized 6-Qt (the 6-Qt Instant Pot Smart WiFi version), but have since purchased the large 8-Qt as well.  The 8-Qt is now the one we use most often.  However, several times a week we use both Instant Pots for dinner.  We’ll have our main Bright Line Eating Instant Pot meal in one and rice, potatoes or corn on the cob in the other.  (We are in the maintenance phase in our house so we do grains at dinner now.)
